History of James Noyce & Sons Golden Gallopers Our Galloper ride was built by Savages of Kings Lynn in 1884 for a Welsh showman John Studt. Not long after it was sold to showman John Cole based near Bristol. In 1900 it was refurbished by J.R Anderson who fitted 30 newly carved horses and 6 cockerels. A larger steam engine was also fitted at that time to drive the heavier ride. This steam engine is now used to drive the Razzle Dazzle ride at Hollycombe Steam Collection near Liphook, Hampshire. The ride was purchased by Hampshire showman James Noyce in 1950 just after the ride was decorated by a well known fairground painter, Neddy Matthews. James Noyce Senior passed away in 1974 and the ride was then travelled many of the country's major fairs by his two sons; Tommy and Jimmy. Throughout the 80's and 90's some of the fairs which the Gallopers had graced include Leeds Valentines Fair, Cardiff Big Weekend Fair, Oxford St. Giles, Witney Feast, Bridgwater, Nottingham Goose Fair, Stratford Mop, Banbury Michaelmas Fair, Chichester Sloe Fair and Loughborough Fair. In the 21st Century the Carousel featured on Marks and Spencer's Fashion Fairground advert aired to the TV screens Autumn 2008 at special request. Today the ride is now owned by Tommy Noyce's son Joseph and wife Narvenka (nee Shaw). We still maintain the carousel to the high standards set by Joseph's grandfather. |
